It seems to me that the debates are only live versions of campaign ads. In fact, their very format promotes glib, manufactured answers.
There is no time for serious discussion of proposed policies, strategies, or plans. It’s always way more about what the other candidate did or didn’t do, as opposed to what he or she plans to do.
I don’t even see how such a spectacle can add to a voter’s decision making process. At best, debates seem to be a proving ground for who speaks better in sound bites and is able to hold gaffes to a minimum.
Perhaps it shows who might be a better anchor for the evening news. But are a news anchor’s qualifications those that define great leaders? I don’t think so.
